INTERVIEW
You performed wonderfully at the U16 EuroBasket despite being a year younger. What do you think about your tournament performance?
I only played 4 matches due to my injury, I think that’s why I couldn’t show myself as I wanted. I can show myself more clearly next year without injuries.
How old were you when you started playing basketball and which teams have you played for so far?
When I was 5, I started playing basketball at my father’s club, MVP. I played there for 8 years, then I was transferred to Anadolu Efes when I was 13. After a successful season there, I had the chance to play for Real Madrid when I was 14.
You became the MVP of the U14 Turkish Championship with Anadolu Efes. What do you think about your Efes season?
I had a very fun and successful season at Anadolu Efes. I also worked hard, I did both individual and team training. The reason I became MVP was because I worked very hard.
Last summer, you decided to go to Spain to join the Real Madrid. You also talk with Barcelona. How did your transfer to Real Madrid come about?
I attended trainings at Real Madrid in the summer and saw that it was a very different atmosphere from other clubs. I was impressed at the first training, so I made this decision.
I think Real Madrid’s youth system is the best in Europe. How did you adapt to the system there and life in Spain?
At first, it was difficult because I was away from my family and I didn’t know Spanish. But then I made friends, gradually overcame homesickness and once I learned the language, I adapted.
What do you think are the differences between basketball played in Türkiye and Spain?
Basketball in Spain is much more fast-paced and you need to give 100% in every practice because the best players from each country come here.
What are your goals for next season?
My goal for the next season is to win the MVP award in both the Spain and European Championship.
What are your long-term goals?
First, I want to rise to the senior team at a young age and go to the NBA.
What are the skills that you think make a difference in your game?
I think the skill that makes me the most different is my court vision.
What are the skill you think you need to improve?
First of all, I want to improve my shooting. If I shoot with a higher percentage, I will be a much different player.
Your father, İbrahim Kutluay, is one of the most important figures in Turkish basketball. Does this put pressure on you or do you see this as an advantage?
No, it does not put pressure, on the contrary, I have an advantage because he helps me a lot. I think those who compare me to my father are wrong because, in my opinion, our playing styles are very different.
Who is your idol for basketball?
Luka Doncic. Because he rises to the senior team at a very young age, was successful in the EuroLeague and went to the NBA. I would love to have a similar career.
Which basketball player would you like to play with in the future?
Anthony Edwards. Because I really like his mentality and jumping ability.
