STRENGTHS
Offense
He’s an effective finisher in the paint. Really good roller in pick&roll actions. Has a lob threat. Can catch the ball early in the pick&roll and go straight to the rim. Likes to go to the rim after the bounce pass. Can finish through contact. Likes to attack from the right side of the paint. Athletic player who runs the floor well. Great at transition offense thanks to his rim runner ability. Active on the offensive rebound and scoring second chance points.
Defense
He is a good rim protector thanks to his wingspan and verticality. Can make chasedown blocks with his athleticism. I know his block stats does not look impressive this season (0.6 BLK in ACB, 0.9 BLK in Europe Cup). But he’s the block leader of easyCredit BBL with 1.6 BLK in 24 MIN last season. Fights in the paint and his boxout is good. Can defend the guards in switch but this is not the strongest part of his defense.
WEAKNESSES
Offense
His finishing with his left hand needs to improve. Not effective in the post-up game. Did not have a shooting threat. Made 3 3PTs (3/16) in his career. His mid-range shot is not good. Has interesting FT mechanics. Needs to improve his FTs. Not a good passer and needs to be careful with offensive fouls. This leads to easy turnovers.
Defense
I don’t like his defensive awareness. Loses his focus and reacts late to the position. Sometimes he focus too much on the ball and forget to pay attention to other players and he can have difficulty against cuts. Can struggle against big men who has a shooting threat.
I think he’s a defensively raw player. Has some good tools but needs to improve his defense.
FENERBAHÇE
He signed a 2.5 year contract with Fenerbahçe Beko. This will be his first EuroLeague experience. I think he has the right profile for Fenerbahçe. Fenerbahçe needs a center like him and he can cover Fenerbahçe’s deficiencies.
Bango’s roller and rim-runner ability translatable to the EuroLeague. He will play alongside Arturs Zagars, Wade Baldwin, Devon Hall, Marko Guduric, Errick McCollum. All of them show good pick&roll ball handler ability. Thanks to Bango’s lob threat, we can expect to see more alley-oop offense from Saras Jasikevicius.
I don’t have so many questions about his offense. Yes, he didn’t have a shooting threat but he can score with pick&roll or second chance points, he’s a good rebounder and always active on the offensive rebound.
Defensively, he will have his times of trouble in the EuroLeague. I think he’s a raw defender in general. He shows good rim-protector potential and has quick feet but his defensive awareness is my biggest concern with him. He will play against a lot of great players in the EuroLeague and his awareness needs to be at a better level. Also needs time to get used to Sarunas Jasikevicius’ defensive schemes.
Bango can score well in short time with his effectiveness in pick&roll, transition and second chance points in the EuroLeague.
I think this season should not be judged to harshly and should be seen as an adaptation season. It would be more accurate to evaluate his performance starting from next season. He will only be able to play in the EuroLeague this season. He won’t play in the Turkish League.
EuroLeague will go into a three-week break on 7 February. This will be a valuable time for Bango to adapt to the team.
